Pro-Choice Film to Screen at SUNDANCE Film Festival On 30th Anniversary
of Roe Vs Wade
SAN FRANCISCO – DECEMBER 19 -- Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of
Happiness, a genre-busting short film that playfully deals with the serious
issue of a woman’s right to choose, will be screened at the SUNDANCE Film
Festival in January 2003. SUNDANCE falls on the 30-year Anniversary of
Roe Vs. Wade. The Film was directed by Tiffany Shlain, founder of the
Webby Awards. Honored by Newsweek as one of the “Women Shaping the 21st
Century,” 32 year old Shlain spearheaded the project in an effort to raise
awareness among young people about the threats facing a woman’s right
to choose.
“This film is both satirical and serious,” said Ms. Shlain. “If we use
laughter to open people up to this important subject, then maybe they’ll
pay attention to the new risks that our right to choose faces.”
Skillfully updating the 1950's school documentary, the 14-minute film
offers up political and social satire regarding the current state of reproductive
rights. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness examines the erosion
of reproductive rights in the United States by interweaving the decline
in amphibian populations with fictional stories of a conservative politician,
a young couple, and a right-wing activist.
The Film was funded in part by Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, which is
known for its award-winning activist technology and efforts to diversify
the movement. “It’s critical to highlight the tenuous position that choice
faces today,” said Dian J. Harrison, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood
Golden Gate. “We financed the making of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit
of Happiness to send the public a powerful message about the importance
of reproductive choice and why it is critical to work to protect it."
For this Film, award winning filmmaker Tiffany Shlain partnered with her
long time collaborator, co-writer Maya Draisin, and co-writer and Emmy
Award winning producer Xandra Castleton. This Grottofilms production was
produced by Castleton. For a full list of credits and additional information
